The quantities of waste produced worldwide are continuously increasing due to the rising population and economic growth. Forecasts predict that around 2.5 billion tons of waste will be generated in 2030. In highly industrialized countries, about 50% of the waste generated is construction and demolition waste, followed by industrial, commercial and mining waste, household waste and waste from waste treatment plants.
Therefore, the issues of waste prevention, waste recycling, and environmentally sound disposal are becoming more and more important. In order to properly recycle or dispose of waste, waste analysis is an important fundamental requirement. Waste analysis is focused on toxic and eco-toxic components, such as heavy metals, halogenated organic compounds, which can be addressed via the sum parameters AOX/EOX, or total organic carbon (TOC and DOC).
This web seminar about the elemental analysis of soils, waste, and eluates addresses existing regulations and standards for heavy metal analysis. Suitable methods are presented for the challenges of sample preparation and analysis of various waste types using AAS, ICP-OES, and ICP-MS techniques.
